We live in a world of quick glances. A face appears at a window, on a street, in a crowded room, and just as quickly, it is gone. We have become practiced at seeing without truly looking. We scan. We scroll. We move on before the moment has had a chance to settle. Look at Me is an invitation to stop and let a face find you. The works gathered in this exhibition share a single subject: the human presence. Not as record, not as type, but as a particular energy, a particular life, asking in some quiet way to be truly seen. A figure resolved into stillness. A presence suggested through color and form alone. A gaze that meets yours directly or one that turns away. Each work arrives differently, but each carries the same essential request. To give a person your full attention is one of the rarest things we offer one another. Artists know this. The works here were made by people who looked, and looked again, and kept looking until something true emerged. That quality of attention is now held inside the work, waiting for a viewer willing to meet it. To look at these works with patience is to discover something a glance would never find. What seemed simple begins to reveal its complexity. A figure you passed quickly draws you back. Something unnamed settles. This exhibit asks for your time. Not a great deal of it, but real time. The kind of attention you might give to someone sitting across from you. What you find in that looking is entirely your own. |
